Smart Cookie

If New York has a signature cookie, it’s surely the “Black and White” (not to be confused with the almost identical Half Moon Cookie, which claims an altogether different geographic heritage). Soft and a bit spongy, the Big Apple variety is a surprisingly shiny shortbread hybrid iced on one side with vanilla fondant and on the other with chocolate fondant. They’ve long been found in corner delis and neighborhood bodegas and but now upscale bakeries are getting in on the act. Our favorite? William Greenberg Dessert’s customizable Black and Whites – now available in a rainbow of colorful hues. Address: 1100 Madison Avenue (b/t 82nd and 83rd)
