The focal point of New York Harbor and a symbol of democracy and freedom throughout the world, the Statue of Liberty is a 151-foot neoclassical sculpture of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. A gift to the people of the United States from the people of France, it was dedicated in 1886 and stands as a welcoming symbol to immigrants. “Lady Liberty” was designed by artist Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and rests on a star-shaped Fort Wood, a one-time fort in the city’s harbor defense system.
